How I learned about Prophecy?

Many years ago an angel came to me and asked me to write a book on how I learned about Prophecy. I have kept a good record of God’s prophetic word to me for over three decades so I began to think over the key words and periods of my education by the Lord and ministry serving him and his people. I think I can do that! But then the angel said, “And name it ‘8 plus Splash.’”

… 8? Plus … splash? Oh! Sure! That’s exactly what I was … um, thinking. Sure. What else would I call it?! ‘7 minus Orange?’ Now that’s being silly! But ‘8 plus Splash!’ makes perfect sense to me!

I first tried to interpret this enigma … but to no avail. Since I had seen my heavenly house and visited it a few times, especially when I was in deep stress, and I had seen a river in my back garden that was somehow linked to the River of Life in heaven, and seemed to be a source of inspiration, refreshing and the Holy Spirit’s presence to my life, I thought, OK, I’ll call the book, “A River in the Garden.” That was close, right? The word in Hebrew for ‘to prophesy’ means something like ‘to bubble up’ I’m told. And so the words Splash, River, Bubble up and Prophecy all seem to be closely associated. But the 8 was tricky—its like the New Season, like the Number of Renewal since 7 is a perfect cycle, then 8 is the first step in a new season. So, ‘New Springs’? New splashes in the face? Getting shot from an 8-barreled water-pistol? … I finally just gave up and named it what the angel said.

And so I just finished the manuscript and it’s longer than I expected at 148,000 words, but follows me through three distinct prophetic learning seasons, living in three separate countries, living in two distinct continents … I hope this honest and at times embarrassing narrative will help younger readers to learn lessons it took me decades to understand. A few of the key take-away’s are:

First, and let’s just be honest, God speaks A LOT and he speaks about EVERYTHING … at ANY TIME … and TO ANYONE and THROUGH ANYONE he wants to! What’s more, he fears NO MAN! Let that just sink in a little. Prophecy is not about your gift, your calling, your word, your vision or your dream. Prophecy happens because God speaks. (Amos 2:8)

But, you say, you can’t hear his voice. Well, if you can’t hear him speak, I 100% guarantee it is not a problem on his end. EVERYONE can hear his voice he told me if they would just quiet themselves down and listen. People don’t HEAR simply because they don’t LISTEN. He talks, just listen.

Third, faith matters. It really does. God speaks to people to draw them into a relationship with himself. He wants the interaction to help develop your spiritual life. There ought to be a fair amount of back-and-forth, give-and-take going on. He wants us to wrestle with him in a way to help free us from the prison of our distrust, the cage of our blindness.

Fourth, when you have a promise from God but things begin to look bleak, when the rent is late and your promised marriage falls apart, don’t be so fast to turn on God and accuse him of wrongdoing. There are A LOT of reasons why things don’t go according to how you think they ought to. Yes, people are often unreliable, they may turn away, they may denounce their blessings, refuse to walk in their callings … but on God’s side, God is not like this. He told me, “I will fulfill every promise that I have made.” Be mindful of doing YOUR PART. If he gave you a condition on a personal outcome, you’d better pay attention to it! But if you do your part he will ALWAYS do his, he told me. So don’t refuse the one who speaks, and be faithful, endure the testing, receive the promised blessings! If there is a fault, it is simply never on his end. When you are confused and don’t know what to believe in, remember God will fulfill every promise that He has made. Trust him. He knows what he’s doing.
